So, here we are in Wellington New Zealand.....

2017 ended with both Gaby and I deciding to temporarily return to New Zealand so we could be around for Grace and Mark.

Mark had decided that continuing at University was not what he really wanted to do and after 3 years he moved, to start an apprenticeship in building. We hope that this will work out for Mark as its a big change from study but we are sure he will work hard and find success in this new career path.

Grace has continued to persevere with her medical studies and she has been enjoying her placements at Dunedin and Timaru Hospitals this year. Grace has a couple more years to go and then is finished; its been 6 years study so far and she is very much looking forward to finally qualifying as a Junior Doctor.

Both Gaby and I were able to find jobs and an apartment in Wellington; this is a city we had really never been to and it was an aim to live in a city as part of our journey - we thought it may have been Paris or Rome.....Gaby is working for the Government with MBIE (Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment) where she is a PA/Team Administrator with the Immigration Section. I was able to get another marine role, this time I am the General Manager for Chaffers Marina which is located in the harbour near the city centre.

We are renting an apartment on Lambton Quay and are enjoying the change in lifestyle. Gaby spent 2 months back in Switzerland at the start of the year and we are both returning back to Europe this December with Grace and Mark for a holiday. At this stage we have no fixed plans, its likely we will be here for around 3 years before continuing with our cycle touring.

Returning to Emerald proved to be a difficult transition; with summer having well and truly arrived it is constantly hot and humid with occasional thunder storms passing through to add to the humidity.

Gaby had unsuccessfully been looking for some casual Christmas work; over here the shop hours are very different to NZ with most shops closed over the weekends and only supermarkets open into the early evening. I was very busy and had a trip to Longreach in the Queensland Outback to plan for.

The construction company I work for was contracted to assist with a school demolition which also involved asbestos removal. I ended up driving a truck and trailer unit the 420km to Longreach. Driving heavy vehicles in rural Australia can be challenging at times due to speed (100kph for trucks), narrow highways with soft shoulders (don’t leave the tar-seal) and larger road trains; after Barcaldine, it was normal to see 4-unit road trains (truck with 3 trailers that are 53 metres long) and wide loads (i.e. truck and trailer units carrying oversized mining machinery to and from Mt Isa).

It was a long drive and I was well pleased to pull into Longreach without any dramas along the road.

Longreach has a population of around 3000 and day time temperatures while I was there reached 41C. Its dry, in its 5^th year of drought and emus and kangaroos regularly are seen in the town looking for food and water.

What is remarkable about the town is it is the founding centre for Qantas and parked at the airport is a 747-200. Longreach was the first operational base for Qantas in 1921 and its anticipated the dry atmosphere should enable the long-term preservation of the aircraft.

Apparently landing the 747 (in 2002) at a small rural airport was quite a challenge and I certainly looked twice when I saw the aircraft on display. This area of Outback Australia requires real fortitude to live and work in such an arid environment and farming is certainly a tough proposition. I certainly give all credit to those pioneers who have carved out an existence in such a tough and uncompromising region.

Gaby flew to New Zealand in early November to attend a 'surprise' birthday dinner that I arranged for Mark's 21st birthday. Family and friends were able to keep the secret from Mark and he was very happy to see 'mum' and enjoy a pre birthday celebration with everyone. Following the dinner in Dunedin, Gaby had a busy week catching up with family and friends in Gore, Queenstown, Alexandra and Dunedin before flying back to Brisbane with Grace and Mark.

I flew to Brisbane on Monday 13 November to meet Gaby, Grace and Mark and on Tuesday we all boarded the P & O Cruise Boat 'Pacific Aria' for a 10 day cruise to Papua New Guinea.

This cruise took us from Brisbane to Rabaul (on the northeastern tip, a town that has been twice previously destroyed by volcanic eruptions), Kitava in Milne Bay (beautiful swimming and beaches), Kiriwina Island then the spectacular Conflict Islands (bright blue clear water in a natural lagoon with white sandy beaches). The cruise had a great itinerary that included plenty of cruising on relatively calm seas (although Grace would disagree) and visits to areas of PNG that are not part of the normal tourist routes.

The vessel, 'Pacific Aria', was comfortable with a good selection of restaurants and bars and our 4 berth cabin was comfortable and functional. The vessel can carry 1260 passengers and 560 staff, she was built in 1994 and was refitted in 2015 when transferring from the Holland America Line (operating between Europe and the USA) to P & O Australia.

Entertainment onboard was excellent and we regularly went to watch the duo of Alex and Bec Crook brother and sister who produce a lot of original music and their single Suitcase did very well in the Australian music charts. We also caught up with them in Brisbane and they are about to go back to the recording studio this week to produce a new CD. Good luck !

Anfangs November flog ich von Brisbane nach Dunedin als Überraschung für Marks 21. Geburtstag. Andrew organisierte ein Nachtessen mit Familie und Freunden in Dunedin und es war ein toller und unterhaltsamer Abend. Ich nütze meine Woche in Neuseeland aus mit einem Zahnarztbesuch und besuchte ein paar Freunde und Familie in Gore, Alexandra und Dunedin. Die letzten 2 Nächte verbrachte ich bei Mark in der Wohnung, die andern Studenten waren alle schon weg und ich putzte, machte Wäsche, räumte auf und zudem jassten wir viel, nachmal mit Grace, die uns besuchen kam und unsere Desserts ass, manchmal zu zweit. ich genoss die Zeit in Neuseeland, es war schön, viele Freunde wieder zu sehen und es war anfangs willkommen kuehl, aber nach 10 Tagen freute ich mich wieder auf etwas wärmeres Wetter in Australien.

Und so flogen wir zu dritt am 13. November früh am morgen nach Brisbane, wo wir bald Andrew trafen und nach einer Nach in Brisbane gings auf die Pacific Aria, ein Kreuzfahrtschiff auf eine 10 taegige Tour von Brisbane nach Brisbane via Papua New Guinea. Für uns war es das erste Mal auf einer Kreuzfahrt und wir genossen es sehr. Wir waren in einer Kabine mit 4 Betten und es hatte erstaunlich viel Platz und das Badezimmer war auch groesser als erwartet. Wir hatten im ganzen 5 Stops auf Inseln, 2 davon waren mit Sandstränden zum Schwimmen, die andern 3 hatten kleine Ortschaften mit nicht viel mehr als einer Hauptstrasse mit ein paar kleinen Läden, aber keine Cafes, einem Markt wo Gemüse wie Bohnen und Kartoffeln verkauft wurden, zudem Erdnüsse und Betelblaetter, die die Einheimischen kauen.  Es hatte überall viele Kinder, die uns jeweils folgten und mit uns plauderten. Das Wetter war tropisch heiss und dueppig, Auf dem 2 Inseln wo man schwimmen konnte nützten wir es voll aus und genossen es, im glasklaren Wasser zu sein, in wunderschönen Schattierungen von Blau und Gruen mit weissen Stränden. Es sah so richtig kitschig schön aus, wie man es in Prospekten sieht. Conflict Islands war traumhaft!

Aber auch die Unterhaltung auf dem Schiff war toll, es wurde so viel angeboten. Jeden Abend hatte es eine neue Show im Theater, etwa 3 mal hatte es Themenpartys und diverse Live Music Bands. Unsere Favoriten waren Alex and Bec Crook, Schwester und Bruder, die jeden Tag im Blue Room spielten und sangen, wo wir viel Zeit verbrachten mit einem Cocktail in der Hand aber auch mit Jasskarten! Sie sind von Brisbane und die letzten 2 Abende haben wir mit ihnen hier in der Stadt verbracht, wo so gespielt haben und anschliessend gingen wir zusammen essen. Es wurden diverse Quizshows auf dem Schiff angeboten und zu viert gingen wir ein paar Mal, bis es dann langsam peinlich wurde, da wir unzählige Glacegutscheine gewannen und immer mit viel Freude einlösten! Zu Marks Freude konnten wir sogar Basketball spielen, wo er wiederum Gutscheine gewann. Und natürlich hatte es auch 2 diverse Schwimmbäder und Hofpools, die wir Regelmäßig besuchten. Langweilig wurde es uns nie und einmal gingen Andrew und ich sogar ins Kino. Wir vier haben unsere erste Kreuzfahrt sehr genossen!

Nun haben wir noch 2 weitere Nächte hier in Brisbane, bevor Andrew und ich wieder nach Emerald zurück gehen, Grace fliegt nach Dunedin zurück und Mark für eine Woche nach Melbourne, um einen ehemaligen Kollegen aus Te Anau zu besuchen.

It has been 'full steam ahead' with Andrew and his new job working for the Emerald Civil Construction Company. They have been busy doing a lot of local council jobs mainly roading upgrades which has been interesting and busy. As Andrew is one of only 2 in the company with his truck licence he has been doing lots of driving; especially moving machinery around and carting the various supplies needed for the jobs (gravel etc).

Currently they are doing a large upgrade in the  main street of Emerald, because of the disruption this work creates it is being done at night which has been nice as its much cooler (20 degrees) but really bad for the large mosquitoes that has arrived for the summer. Gaby has been busy with her exercise programme at the gym and swimming pool and is also undertaking online study in physics (?) and Chinese. Good to keep the brain operating 🙂

Hallo, es ist wieder eine Weile her, seit ich/wir das letzte Mal geschrieben haben. Es ist immer noch heiss und die Elstern jagen mich immer noch, wenn ich mit dem Velo unterwegs bin!

Andrew hat sich in seinem neuen Job eingelebt und momentan machen sie Nachtarbeit, hier in Emerald. Das ist schön für die Arbeiter, den die Nacht durch ist es nicht so heiss wie am Tag, dafür hat es viele Moskitos, und vor allem aber sehr grosse Moskitos, die nachts unterwegs sind und durch die Arbeitskleidung durch stechen.

Ich habe meine Routine mit den Hausarbeiten und dem Schwimmbad, was in diesem Wetter herrlich ist. Auch gehe ich ins Fitness Center hier und strample mich auf dem Velo ab, denn draussen ist es zu heiss und zu mühsam mit dem Elstern, die es auf uns Velofahrer abgesehen haben. ich will nicht meine ganze Fitness verlieren, die ich mit viel Arbeit auf dem Velo erworben habe und so radle ich ein paar Mal pro Woche in einer kühlen Umgebung.

Zudem hab ich mal geschaut, was man online alles so machen kann, gratis, und da kam ich zu einer Uni, die ein paar Fächer anbietet, online und ohne Kosten. Es sind 4 wöchige Kurse, die aber zu nichts führen oder gelten, aber man lernt trotzdem Neues und Interessantes. So mache ich Chinesische Zivilisation, das ist sehr interessant. Jede Woche hat es ein neues Thema und fing letzte Woche mit der Sprache und Chinesischem Schreibstil an, und diese Woche waren Festivals und Essen undTrinken an der Reihe. Am Ende jeder Woche hat es einen Test  und nach 4 Wochen, wenn man mindestens 60% richtig hat in seinen Tests, gibts online einen Foetzel um zu sagen, man hat das gemacht. Es ist interessant und gibt mir etwas zu tun. Am Montag schaute ich dann, was für Kurse sie sonst noch so anbieten und da hatte es Physik, etwas das ich in der Schule nie gerne machte, da ich es nicht verstand. Es hatte einen Knopf zum Drücken für mehr Information und ich dachte, ich schau mal und zu meinem Horror war ich im Kurs eingeschrieben. Obwohl der Kurs ja die Woche vorher schon angefangen hat! von Anfang an war ich eine Woche hintendrein! Ja, es ist schwierig aber ich versuche es mal und wenn Andrew heute Abend zur Arbeit geht, werde ich hoffentlich meinen 2. Test machen und dann nächste Woche hab ich dann aufgeholt! Bis zum nächsten Mal.

Our days are now busy with work and preparations for work. Our day starts at 5.30am with breakfast and Andrew is off to work by 6.15am. He meets with the boss and staff at the company workshop and then its off to work. A normal day ends with Andrew back home by 6pm so its been a busy time for both of us.

Andrew has been working in Capella, 55km north of Emerald but also has been across to Blackwater which is 80km east. The company is busy with works for the local council; mainly roading and footpaths and the company also does a lot of traffic control for works on the state highway. As Andrew is the only one with a truck licence he spends a lot of the time working with an excavator moving gravel around as well as taking construction debris to the dump.

Gaby has a full programme, there is always meals to be prepared, shopping to be done and she goes to the gym and swimming pool on alternate days. Gaby is looking for some casual work and won't be looking for permanent work until she returns from her visit to Switzerland early in 2018.

Unser Tag beginnt um halb sechs am Morgen, wenn wir frühstücken und um 6.15 Uhr geht Andrew zur Arbeit. Er hat ein kurzes Treffen mit dem Boss im Geschäftsdepot und dann ist er unterwegs. An einem normalen Tag ist Andrew um 18 hr wieder zurück, aber er kam auch schon später heim.

Er arbeitet in Capella im Moment, das ist 55km von Emerald entfernt, aber am Freitag waren sie in Blackwater für den Tag, das ist 80km von hier. . Die Firma hat viele Arbeiten für die Gemeinden, vor allem Strassen und Trottoirbau, aber sie machen auch Verkehrskontrollen auf den Hauptstrassen. Andrew ist der einzige Arbeiter, der im Moment eine Lastwagenbewilligung hat und er fährt viel mit dem Lastwagen und Bagger. Es ist unglaublich, wieviele Leute hier keine Fahrbewilligung haben wegen Alkohol am Steuer, und es dünkt mich, sie sagen es jeweils sogar mit etwas Stolz, ls wäre es etwas Tolles, wenn einem das Billet temporär entzogen wird!

Auch ich habe ein volles Programm mit dem frühen aufstehen am Morgen, das Zmorge machen und das Mittagessen für Andrew vorbereiten zum Mitnehmen. Es gibt immer genug zu tun mit Putzen, Waschen, Glätten, Einkaufen, Backen, Nachtessen kochen und dann gehe ich noch ins Schwimmbad, wenn mir alles etwas zu heiss wird! Was im Moment häufig ist, dass es zu heiss ist. Ich mache soviel wie möglich am Morgen wenn es noch einigermassen erträglich ist von den Temperaturen her, vorallem das Kochen und Backen. Am Nachmittag ist es häufig einfach zu heiss um gross etwas zu machen und ich habe einfach keine Energie.  Aber trotz meinen diversen Jobs werde auch ich für etwas Arbeit schauen und wenn ich nächstes Jahr aus der Schweiz zurück komme, werde ich ernsthaft auf die Suche gehen, im Moment schaue ich für etwas Gelegenheitsarbeit. und kühleres Wetter!
