Bula Bula from Fiji!

We had decided on a 10 day break to get away from the July winter cold of Te Anau and what better place than Fiji.

At only 3.5 hours flight time from Wellington, and with a temperature of around 30º, Fiji was a great choice that is also good value. We had originally booked for 3 of us (Gaby, Mark and myself) but at the last minute the Southland U19 boys basketball team qualified for the NZ National Tournament and Mark decided basketball was more important than a holiday in Fiji with his Mother and Father.

We had booked in at the Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort and Spa, a luxury Fiji resort on the private Yanuca Island, as it had all the amenities we wanted (including a 9 hole golf course) and was bedside a lagoon that was great for snorkelling. We managed to fill in our days with a session at the gym every day, swimming, lounging and reading as well as working our way through the menu at the excellent Beach Bar and Grill that manly served freshly caught fish and grilled vegetables.

The weather was fantastic, the only thing we were mindful of was dengue fever as the east of Fiji had recorded more than 10,000 cases of dengue fever and at least 11 deaths from the disease, so plenty of insect repellent was used. We spent all our time at the resort, apart from a few meals at a small restaurant opposite (called Geckos) and a couple of trips to the local shop which unfortunately burnt down on our last day.

The resort was comfortable and adequate, as a couple it’s unlikely we would go back to the Shangri-La as it is more suited to families but we enjoyed our time and managed to find enough places to enjoy the scenery and avoid the families and children.
